The “seenigama devalaya” (hindu shrine) | Unawatuna Beach

Known to be the landing place of a legendary person connected with the southern drumming and devil dancers of southren srilanka this shrine is worshipped by all and believed to have divine powers. one such proof was at the time of the tsunami in 2006 while the buildings on the shore were damaged beyond repair this shrine which is on top of rocky isle ( the wave would definitely have travelled over the shrine by the height it arrived at the beach,) near the beach did not suffer any significant damage.

During “asala” festival in july/august over thousands of devotees visit to witness the colorful processions, pandals and fire walking (which one can participate if dare) is well worth a visit to come to grips with the beleifs of the local people.
